Meet rookie Ron Belisario

The early rookie hazing is courtesy of Ohman.   Meet our rooks:  The one on the left is lefty Brent Leach, the one on the right is righty Ron Belisario. Belly (Belisario_ has been in more games than any other pitcher.  Currently he has a 2.30 ERA with 15 BB and 30 K’s.

Belisario was born in Venezuela on December 31, 1982 so he is 26.

He signed a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training with the Dodgers for 2009. He was late in showing up for spring training because of some visa problems in his home country, so didn’t get a chance to really compete until late in the spring. However, he pitched well in the last few spring training games and was added to the Dodgers opening day roster.  Belly  made his Major League debut on April 7 working one scoreless inning as a relief pitcher against the Padres.

He has put in his time in the minors, making over 150 appearances. He began his time as a starting pitcher in the Florida Marlins organization, where he signed 10 years ago. He was sidelined for the entire 2005-06 seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

His past two seasons have been spent in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, mainly pitching in Double-A Altoona, where his ERA was above 4.00.

Belisario told MLB.com about his recent improvement and success, citing that, “The big difference is using the two-seamer to come inside on left-handed hitters.”

Belisario:   Gracias por el trabajo que has hecho y por cumplir con la encomienda :-).   Nice meeting you in Chicago!

Update:  Awesome win Tuesday night coming back from a 5 run deficit!   I love my boys in Blue!

    Hey Russyethier,
I talked to Belly in Chicago. I think is story is feel good story where he has lingered in the minors for a while and how he made the team at the last minute.
    .
    Hola Ale,

    Julia,
So do the Dodgers do the hazing at the end of the season. Ohman just took it upon himself to start early. The dressing up will come later.

    Jane,
Me too! I love the pink bags. You can see a Casey Blake Bobblehead on one. The win last night was so exciting.

    pittpeas,
I am glad Andy and Delwin are working out in Pittsburgh. I always rooted for both of them.
    .
    Dodger4life,
Yes, Leach looks like he likes his knap sack. Belly has been a great surprise. I can’t wait to see how they will dress come September for the actual rookie hazing. let the party continue with the Phillies in town!

Seems like rookie hazings are taking a sharp decline these days as the Dodgers youth movement ends and the kids become too experienced to really call kids anymore. It’s nice to see Belisario doing well.

If somebody told us last year that dropping Penny, Lowe, and Nomar, losing Kent and Maddux, and then watching Manny be suspended would lead to a MLB leading team that is destroying the NL West, we’d probably have laughed and said keep dreaming.

    Go Dodgers.

    Aducker,
Yes, our youth movement are not kids anymore. I wish some of them were producing more. Belisario has been has been the work horse in the bully. Shall we start calling Everyday Belly? Got to love that we still have the best record in baseball without all those guys we lost + Manny’s suspension. But the guys have cooled off like the weather here in Dodgerland.

Kaybee, I love the rookie hazing. I have not had a chance to see them in person in their “dressed up” outfits.
    .
I have not had a chance to put a new blog. Busy, busy at work and I head out Sunday morning for a business trip.
