Kershaw gets to start game 1 of the NLCS

An a Little Child Shall Lead Them.   I heard Vin Scully say that of players like Fernando Valenzuela.

Lefty 21 years old, Clayton Kershaw gets to start the first game of the NLCS.

Congratulations Kershaw!

The rest of the rotation is surprising.   I was expecting another lefty in the second game.

Game 2  is Vicente Padilla.

Game 3.  Hiroki Kuroda

Game 4.  Randy Wolf.

I am having trouble with my laptop so I could not post this yesterday:

Happy belated birthday to John Wooden!  He turned 99 yesterday!

I have seen John Wooden at Dodger Stadium catching a game and visiting with Vin Scully.

I was also lucky that I went to see John Wooden and Vin Scully last year at the “Scully & Wooden For The Kids” event.    It was an unforgetable night hearing Vin and Coach share their many stories.

Coach conversations always include  inspiring poems he recites from memory. Here is one example:

“No written word nor spoken plea
Can teach our youth what they should be,
Nor all the books on all the shelves.
It’s what the teachers are themselves.”

Here is Vin Scully talking about John Wooden:

It is with great sadness that I heard the news of the McCourts separating.   Timing is not good.   The Dodgers have been a family owned team except for the Fox Sports era that was a fiasco.

Well, we got a game to play in less than 7 hours so let’s concentrate on the NLCS and beating the Phillies!

  1. Jane Heller

The timing wasn’t great on that announcement about the McCourts, but their situation won’t have any effect on the players. They’ll go out and do their best and you’ll be there to cheer them on. John Wooden is 99? Amazing.

  2. Elizabeth D.

I’m secretly cheering for the Dodgers just don’t tell anyone. I don’t really know why that’s a secret, I guess it’s because a close friend of mine is a huge Giants fan. Anyway, similar to Scully I call the young players babies. I’m thinking that might slip out in an interview one day haha. Good luck tonight!

  3. crzblue2

You got that right BBE, WE LOVE our bums!
thanks! Yeah, I can’t believe ethier .. I mean either that John Wooden turned 99! Good health to you Coash!!
So good to read you here! We need some cheering for our bums so THanks!! I call the young guns babies too!

  4. Buz

Emma, I wonder if you are aware that today is the 21st Anniversary of the fabulous Kirk Gibson heroics in Game 1 of the World Series. Can we get another special moment from our new #23???? I had lunch with my old baseball friends today. One of whom is 87 years old and a friend of John Wooden! He reminded me that John turned 99 yesterday…. I could only say wow.
    Buz –

    Okay Emma,
The wait is over. Time for the Boys in Blue to show who is boss.
I still find it kind of wild that Padilla will be going in the 2-slot and might get 2 starts in the NLCS. I would have thought that Kuroda and Wolf both would have moved up a spot or two and Padilla get the 4-slot.
Either way, hope they have enough to squash the red pinstripes tonight.

If I were Kershaw, I would dream of this moment. The dude is 21 and has a whole career ahead of him, yet he is pitching in the first game of the NLCS!! That is crazy! Just learned something in Spanish class… better look out, I will be a fluid speaker in no time Emma.

    Hola Senora,

    Que dia es hoy?

    Months or Mes

And that’s all she wrote. I also know days of the week and a lot of objects as well. You gotta tutor me over the internet or something. : )

  7. crzblue2

That current #23 player was the only one that did not get a hit. He went o for 5. If we had Loney in the 5th spot, we could have gotten more runs. The boys fought back we came up short.
I was also surprised that Padilla is going in game 2. Let’s hope he is nails today. Thanks Rays .
    Hola senor Ted.
    Perdimos el primer juego 🙂

  8. crzblue2

More reason for me not to go there. I’ve seen one of those abnoxious fans in the ITD blog. He goes by the name of phan52.
Irony that the matchup is Pedro against Padilla.

  9. aducker

Phillies fans are sure gloating on today as if the series is over after 1 game. I hope the Dodgers go out today and get a decisive victory to even the series and build some momentum going into Philly. I’m having 2008 flashbacks already with crazy obnoxious Phillies fans running around everywhere talking about how much talent their team has compared to every other team in the history of the world.I hope that this series swings back to the Dodgers favor and if it does the Dodgers fans remember to show some class and not be jerks about it.

  10. aducker

It wasn’t the decisive victory I was hoping for but in a way it may be better. It really shakes the Phils team confidence with their bullpen some more. The Phillies bullpen so far has allowed 4 ER in 4.2 INN for an ERA of 8.57. Not very good. The Dodgers bullpen is has allowed just 3 ER in 6.0 INN for an ERA of 4.50. Much better than 8.57.

  11. crzblue2

Yes, that was a wild game and especially the battle of the wild fifth when both pitchers gave a combined 8 runs.
A battle for 9 innings that first game. Totally dissapointed on Casey not being at the bat. But yes! we pulled the second one! I could breathe again!
You always touch good points. But I so hope our batters do a better job against Lee. And then there is Kuroda who has been inactive. Praying for my Dodgers!
