#throwbackthursday from a year ago in September. Kershaw was a master at work then like he was last night against the Giants. Tankas.
I have done haikus in the past but did not know about Tankas. Haikus are a three-line poem of 5/7/5 syllables. Tankas have two additional lines of 7 syllables so they are 5/7/5/7/7. I was reading the WordPress Monday writing challenge for this week to write a tanka or a set of tankas https://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_writing_challenge/full-tanka/
Here it is what I came up with during Clayton Kershaw masterpiece performance yesterday at Dodger Dodger Stadium.
Kershaw on the mound
Pederson playing center
Good omen this night
First Major League hit for Joc
A single in the second!
The crowd is roaring
Kershaw wheeling and dealing
Cy Young performance
reached 200 K’s tonight
5th straight time in his career
Kershaw can hit too
With a single in the fifth
Daring base running
after a single by Dee
broke open the scoreless game
Home-run Uribe!
With Crawford on base Woo-Hoo!
score four to zero
but in the fifth Bryce homered

With the Memory of the Dodgers getting no hit in Houston on August 21 still fresh in my mind, I went to the game on Sunday with my little blue broom as the Dodgers were going for the sweep.
The broom and the Dodger hitters did not get a chance as Arrieta was filthy, in the 9th inning, Jake Arrieta struck out Turner, Rollins and Utley to record his first no hitter on Sunday August 30, 2015. Tip of my Dodger hat to Arrieta.
As a consolation prize, monday at noon, I tried to log on to MLB #domino nono link to win a free pizza but no pizza for me. Double no-no.
The game was on ESPN so no Vin Scully on the air to add to his repertoire of called no hitters. Jaime Jarrin added another one to his repertoire. Pepe Yniguez and Fernando Valenzuela were off too as you also get the ESPN game in Spanish
I said in Spanish after the game “Le tocó bailar con la mas fea a Wood” which means “Wood got stuck dancing with the ugliest one” it is a Spanish saying.
The silver lining: The Dodgers did not lose any ground (thanks St Louis!) as the Giants lost to the Cardinals.
The Giants are in town now at Dodger Stadium for a three game series. Peavy against Anderson tonight. Bumgarner against Greinke on Tuesday. Everyone in attendance on Tuesday gets a Justin Turner (El Rojo!) bobblehead. Wednesday it will be Leake against Kershaw.
Let the dance begin!
PS: Only one team in baseball history was no-hit twice in one season and went on to win the World Series, the 1917 White Sox. Who no hit them? The New York Giants.
I am reading the book about George Genovese titled “A Scout’s Report. My 70 Years in Baseball”. It is written with Dan Taylor. I had a chance to hear Mr. Genovese at a SABR event a few years back, then a couple a few weeks ago I went to his talk/book signing event at South Pasadena. It was an honor to hear him and his author. Mark Langill presented him. In attendance were Fred Claire who was a member of the Dodgers’ front office for 30 years And John Young who played for the Tigers in 1971 and founded RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities). These two men along with some other people in the audience were there to pay tribute to Mr. Genovese based on what they had to say when they put their hand up. They did not ask a question, they praised Mr. Genovese.
I am fascinated with the book. What a trajectory! What a life! From his playing days in the minor league to playing with the Senators to managing in the minor league under the wings of Branch Rickey when Mr. Rickey was with the Cardinals and the Pirates, to when Mr. Rickey sent him to Mexico to managing in the Texas league for the Giants to being asked to scout in California because his eye for talent was unmatched, to working for the Dodgers.
From Peter Mancuso, Chairman of the Nineteen Century Committee, Society for American Research:
“this book is not just a biography, it is a Masters Degree in Baseball, from how to play, manage, coach, inspire, understand, evaluate and enjoy our great National Pastime..”
I ran into an article from the LA Times When George Genovese was at Dodger Stadium. This part caught my attention:
” The ball soars into center field and Puig, flashing his speed, makes the catch. It reminds Genovese of a young Jose Cardenal or maybe Roberto Clemente starting out in Puerto Rico.
“The kid is so gifted” he says of Puig.”
I value the opinion of a man that has played, managed and still coaches, inspires, understands, evaluates and enjoys our great National Pastime.
I am heading to San Diego soon for my second trip there this year to see the Dodgers. I am excited to see Kershaw & Greinke pitch Friday and Saturday. The matchups this weekend are:
Friday: Kershaw against Despaigne
Saturday: Greinke against Kennedy. The game time on MLB says 7:10 & the same says on my ticket. Usually games on Saturday in San Diego start around 5.
Sunday: Bolsinger who had been a pleasant surprise fir the Dodgers with a record of 4-1 and an ERA of 2.08 takes the mound. The pitcher for the Padres has not been announced.
Although there is a June gloom, I see the forecast as fun fun fun at Petco Park. Go Dodgers!!
This weekend I will be in San Diego but if I was not, I would definitely go to this event. From the back of the sport section of the LA Times:
LA Times Book Club names ‘Boys of Summer’ as its next selection
To celebrate this book, the joy of baseball, and our own Dodgers, we will be hosting an event at Jackie Robinson’s alma mater, UCLA, in their prestigious Hall of Fame on Sunday, April 26. Author Roger Kahn, Dodger great Maury Wills, LA Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke and Dodger alumni will be there in person for a great conversation about baseball in our community. Mickey Kantor, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce and avid baseball fan, will moderate the conversation.
It looks to be a great event. Roger Kahn’s book about the Brooklyn Dodgers back when he covered the team was the second baseball book I read. It is one of my favorites
Twas the Night before Opening Day and all through Dodger town
Dodger fans anxiously waited for the final countdown
At the stadium the awnings were hung with much care
in hope that in October they will again be there
The fans all sleepy snuggled in their bed
while visions of World Series danced in their heads
after finishing blogging and loading the MLB at Bat
I went upstairs to take a long nap
when my alarm kept making such a clatter
I sprang out my bed to see what was the matter
Away to Dodger Stadium we left in a dash
drove up I-10 but had to stop for some cash
On the mound, Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw,
Goes against James Shield for the Opening Day show
On Kershaw, on Adrian, On Uribe, on Puig, on Rollins, on Ellis
Give us a win fellas!
Giddiness! Opening Day is the reason
Good luck to my Dodgers and to all fans a good season!
In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Reward.” I am a baseball junkie. I LOVE Baseball!! What better reward to a baseball junkie like me who had a long winter than to watch her Boys in Blue return? Spring Training is our fix!!
A reward is watching Clayton Kershaw throw again. A reward is getting an autograph from Dodgers future like shortstop Corey Seager
Good luck to JUAN Pierre on his retirement and wonderful career. This is an old post from Spring Training in 2010 I called “The Reunion” with Juan Pierre, Kemp and Ethier
I actually missed taking the pictures because I went looking for food. Lucky for me my friend LuvtheDodgers23 stayed so she took all these pictures. When I saw them I went “ahhh, how cute!”
The shake:
Where are you pointing Andre?
Friends chatting
Matt Kemp shows up! Here is the bump!
and here are the three doing the bump:
The hand shake:
And another bump before leaving
A tough week for LA Sports fan this week.
I mentioned this on facebook but not here.Last week we mourn two LA sports figures in Willie Davis and Merlin Olsen.
Willie Davis who still holds the all-time L.A. Dodgers records for the hits, extra-base hits, total bases, plate appearances, triples, and for the longest hitting streak, at 31 games. The last time I saw Willie Davis was at the RBI(Reviving Baseball in Inter-cities) dinner last year.
Merlin Olsen. As a Los Angeles…
