Dodgers FanFest and 42 at Dodger Stadium

The first thing I noticed when I got to Dodger Stadium were the incredible long lines. I said “If that is the line I need to get in I am leaving” but I was told there was another line to get into the Fanfest. That line was much smaller. I got in line and started talking to the fans around me when one told me that if you are a season ticket holder you can walk right in, “Ahhh”, I thought “much better” Still the lines inside to get autograph were already long so I walked around chit chatting with friends

Afterwards I looked for the food trucks. I ordered a

a pupusa stuffed with chicken, cheese and spinach that was very good. I washed that down with a mango drink with boba (tapioca balls).

I had not heard from Lorena and I could not find Rosie so I was contemplating leaving to SABR day at the La Habra library. I was actually mapping how to get there when I heard from Lorena. I was so glad to see her! I had not seen her since our last game where Lorena, Rosie and I sat in the dugout seats for the last game at Dodger Stadium. Afterwards Amanda showed up then I ran into Char who is also a member of the Baseball Reliquary. She is a big fan of Wes Parker so I turned around and said “look at this”

Char was telling me about the baseball exhibition at the end so we all walked there. I had seen Gary Cypres exhibition at the Folk Art museum twice before so I left them there to go see and listen to Vin Scully.FANFEST AT DODGER STADIUM

They caught up with me and we listened to Matt Kemp. I told them that I was going back to the baseball exhibition. I started taking some pictures when I saw Dodgers Historian Mark Langill. He introduced to the two men he was talking to, Randy Tivens of Let’s talk Dodgers and Gary Cypres, owner Sports Museum of Los Angeles.

Photo: Great talking Dodger history with Randy Tivens, @Marklangill and Gary Cypres. Thank you gentlemen!

Randy Tivens, Mark Langill and Gary Cypres.

These three gentlemen made the day more enjoyable talking baseball and a little football was mixed in there too.   It was such a long chat that Mark was afraid he was going to faint.  I offered Mark one of the rice crispies they had at the Fanfest with the JCPenney logo made of sugar with sprinkles.  He was eating that when Jorge Martin stopped to say Hi. I told Jorge “I almost did not recognize Jorge, you look like a regular fan. Mark said “he is!” 🙂

From there Mark went to get something to eat and Randy and I went to have our first Cool-A-Coo of 2013!

Movie 42 at Dodger Stadium

Randy, Mark, Gary and I were talking about the upcoming movie 42, Jackie Robinson, Harrison Ford and Branch Rickey.  I told Mark “they should show the movie at Dodger Stadium” to which he responded “We are”   🙂  Randy said “there you go Emma, exclusive!.  haha.

Rest in Peace Boyd Bartley

Rest in peace Boyd Bartley.

Every year on New Years Day, I do a post paying tribute to all the Dodgers that have passed away during the year.  Last night I was up until very late updating my list, checking the list of  MLB players that have passed away and checking who were Dodgers.    I told my brother Vic this morning  “There are 75 players that have passed away with Ryan Freel”   I was surprised by the high number and told him that I hoped it will not go up.

I had to come to work today.  While at work  I got a message from Nick of www.examiner.com with the bad news that Boyd Bartley had passed away last Friday.  See his article here http://www.examiner.com/article/boyd-bartley-92-former-brooklyn-dodger-player-and-scout-signed-orel-hershiser

Boyd Bartley, former Brooklyn Dodger shortstop passed away Friday at 92

Boyd Barley (02-11-1920 to 12-21-2012)   He was 92.

Here is part of the article:

Bartley was signed out of the University of Illinois in 1943 after receiving a bonus from the Dodgers to steer him away from his hometown Chicago Cubs. The young shortstop was heralded for his defensive prowess and received comparisons to then-Indians shortstop Lou Boudreau. The Dodgers wasted little time in testing Bartley’s skills, inserting him in to the lineup a day after he was signed, starting both games of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds

Sadly, Bartley never lived up to the comparison to the future Hall of Famer. Bartley made three errors in his first three games, shaking the confidence of manager Leo Durocher. He would last nine games in a week-and-a-half, batting 1-21, with his only hit coming ironically against the Chicago Cubs. Bartley was sent down to Montreal due to his lack of production, as the 37-year-old Durocher inserted himself into the shortstop role.

Also this:

While serving with the Army in the Pacific, Bartley was operating a jeep when he encountered a Japanese patrol. In his attempt to escape the patrol, his vehicle flipped over and he injured his shoulder. His arm would never fully recover.

Starting in 1968 he became a scout for the Dodgers, holding the position for over 25 years. His most prized signing, Orel Hershiser.  The prized Dodger pitcher fondly recalled Bartley’s courtship in his 2001 biography, “Between the Lines.”

“In a few weeks Boyd Bartley, a Dodger scout, came to our home in Detroit to present their offer. Because I wasn’t going to turn twenty–one for three more months, my dad had to be in the meeting. Mr. Bartley offered me ten thousand dollars, an assignment, and a dream. ‘We’ll send you to our Class A team in Clinton, Iowa. You’ll have the chance to grow and develop and work your way up the ladder to play in the big leagues. We want you to pitch in Dodger Stadium some day.’ I was awestruck by his words. My dream was about to come true. I was going to turn pro. After a short meeting in the kitchen with my dad and mom, I took the offer.”

Rest in peace Mr. Bartley.  There are now 42 Brooklyn Dodger players alive.

Thanks Nick.    Glad you made a trip to Dodger Stadium and I got to mee you and your girlfriend.  Maybe I will see you at next year SABR convention.

John Schulian, Scott Akasaki, Wes Parker and Jim Colburn

Last Saturday I went to see John Schulian speak at the Allendale library.   Terry Cashman of the Baseball Reliquary introduced him.  He talked about Boxing, Basketball, Football and baseball.  He read from his columns in the book “Sometimes They Even Shook Your Hand.”   I immediately liked his quick-witted style and good nature sarcasm.

Terry did a word association with Schulian.  On Pete Rose, John said “so-so gambler.  Should be in the Hall of Fame.”   Billy Martin “A mouse waiting to be a rat.” (great line)   Howard Cossell “Not my favorite guy.”   Others who he think should be in the Hall of Fame:   Barry Bonds, yes. Roger Clement, yes.  Mark McGuire, no.   Of Kobe Bryan he said “Is going to be fascinating to watch him grow old.”

Afterwards I got in line to buy his book “Sometimes They Even Shook Your Hands.”  When it got to be my turn, Terry told John that I am a big Dodger fan.  John wrote in my book “For Emma, the Queen of Dodger Stadium  -John Schulian 11/10/12”  😉

Terry usually sets other baseball books related to the speaker or topic at the library.   I checked out  “The Sporting World of Jim Murray” by Jim Murray, and “What A Time It Was  The Best of W.C. Heintz on Sports”

Discussion on “The Business of Baseball”  Claremont, CA

Char Ham posted the following on the Baseball Reliquary page:

This Tuesday, November 20, there is a free discussion on “The Business of Baseball” at Claremont McKenna College’s Athenaeum at 6:45 p.m. Speakers include host Dodger Scott Akasaki, Claremont College alum and Dodger alum Wes Parker, and Cub alum Jim Colburn.
Address is 385 E. Eighth St. In Claremont. When I was 12, I wrote a snail mail to Wes Parker with questions for a career assignment, and he replied. I lost the pink index sized postcard, but the answers were neatly typed. I have never met him so when I go, I will tell him about it.
Nice story on Wes Parker.   I am going to see if I can make it to this event.
On another note: what happened to Our Latest Leaders post from Mark?  We did not have one for October.  Is not too late Mark.

2011 Dodger Caravan and Spring Training plans

Spring is in the air!    Check out the flowers outside where I work.  They are  called Magnolia Alexandria.

Magnolia Alexandria .jpg

The Dodgers Caravan will be February 14th to the 15th!   This year is full of community work where the fans get to join in!.

My friend Lorena, Erik and I are thrilled that we were able to signed up for both days.  February 14th it will be Cleanup our LA river and February 15th, cleanup the Bay (Santa Monica).   I can’t wait!

The Dodger current and past players along with Dodger announcers will also visit hospitals and schools as part of giving back to the community.    I think getting the fans involved is a great idea.  Details   here

Dodgers will also be at the Lopez Tonight show in Burbank on Valentines Day but I could not get tickets to that.   Can anyone get us at the Warner Bros studios on that day?   I used to know someone that used to get me VIP tickets but that person moved out of state.

My friend Lorena and started talking Spring Training games when we met at the Laker game last night.  Yeah, Lakers lost to the Spurs but we had a good time.

We along with friend Margie decided on  the first two games at Camelback Ranch.  The first game is Sunday February 27th against the Angels and Monday against the White Sox.   We might get there on Saturday or early Sunday.   I can’t wait!

February is looking pretty good!  that is Andre Ethier jumping up with Joaquin

In the video you can see Russell Martin, Andre Ethier and James Loney with children from the Heart Gallery of Los Angeles,

This is the second year the Dodgers team up with the Heart Gallery of Los Angeles doing the Calendar.   According to Josh Rawitch, Dodgers Vice President of Communications, the Gallery has had a high rate of success since the kids have been featured on the Team calendar.

Happy 83rd Birthday Vin Scully!

Vin Scully!  We love you!   Have a wonderful 83rd birthday!   I can’t wait till I hear you again saying “Is time for Dodger Baseball!”

God bless you Vin and thank you so much for all that you have given us Dodger and Baseball fans.

Here is Erik and I wishing Vin Scully a good night on a cold night at Dodger Stadium.

Happy Birthday also to Ross Porter who shares a birthday with Vin.  Ross broadcasted with Vin Scully for 28 years.

It’s The Worst Frickin Loss Of The Year

August 12, 2010 has to be the worst Dodger loss of the year.

Here is my feable attempt at butchering the song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”   much like Kershaw’s game got butchered last night.

It’s the worst frickin loss of the year

With the bullpen eight run giving

And everyone telling you to leave Kuo in

It’s the worst frickin loss of the year

It’s the sick-sickest season of all

With those trip to the mound and crappiest meetings

When Torre signals a call

Is the sick-sickest season of all

There will be wakes for hosting

Coaches for roasting

And b-itching out in the blogs

There will be scary Dodger stories

And tales of the meltdown

To tell for a long, long time ago.

Is the worst frickin loss of the year

There is so much cursing

And heartburns from the blowing

Of the win that was so, so near

Is the worst frickin loss of the year

There was Bellisario sucking

Blake with an error

And Broxton blowing another good save

There will be scary Dodger stories

And tales of the meltdown

To tell for a long, long time ago

Is the worst frickin loss of the year

There is so much cursing

And hearburns from the blowing

Of the win that was so so near

Is the worst frickin loss

Is the worst frickin loss

Is the worst frickin loss

Is the worst frickin loss of the year

A Split & 90090

We split the 4 game series with the Phillies!   I watched 3 of the 4 from my beloved Dodger Stadium.  I had to miss Sunday’s game as I had an early flight to N.H. where I am working this week.  I will miss the two game series this week with the Padres.   Dodgers have two days off this week (Monday & Thursday).

Andre Ethier had two Walk-offs!   Friday night it was in the 9th inning and Saturday afternoon in the 12th innings!   It was so incredible watching the walk-offs at the stadium and walking down the row hi-fiving everyone!

Earlier before the Saturday game, Dodger Stadium officially got their own zip code!   90090!  After watching the official presentation on the field, I headed upstairs to my seat when I noticed that representatives of the post office were selling player’s stamps with the official zeal.  I bought one from each player they had (9) and I also bought a cool envelope and a set of 50 anniversary Dodger postcards that I had them add the zeal.  In addition, I had my ticket stamped.   Check it out!  I love, love this stamp collection!

I landed at Logan airport only to discover that my luggage did not make it.  My co-worker’s luggage arrived but not mine.  American airline (evil) said they’ll deliver it to the hotel which is about one hour away from Logan.   They also said they stopped delivering at 11:p.m. so I bought me the essentials to get me bybut I am not happy :-(.   I sure hope my luggage is at the hotel by the time I get back from work Monday evening.

I Do Not Condone Steroid Use

Today walking around Dodger Stadium I noticed some fans wtih t-shirts saying “Free Manny” or “I Support Manny”    Someone asked where they got the t-shirts and they said someone outside the stadium was selling them for $5.  I was left wondering if those people bought the t-shirts because it was $5 or because they think is OK to cheat with steioids.   I don’t condone steroid use, to condone it would be to say “is OK to cheat.”   Is it OK for kids to cheat on their exam?   No!  Is unfair for those that have worked hard to take those exams.

It is unfair for those players that have stayed clean and continue to stay clean even with all the steroids being used around them.  It reminded me of what Jeff Kent said during his retirement speech when asked what he thought about this whole steroid issue.  He said “The integrity of the game has been jeopardized for so many years, and I’m embarrassed about the steroid era.”  He also said “I saw it around me what could I do but work harder to compete.”

If you have read my post you know that I met Manny and found him to be so nice.   But just because he was nice to my friends and I does not mean he gets a pass with me.  It also bothers me that he has not addressed his teammates.  If he needs more time for that, Ok take it but do address your teammates.

I gave Barry Bonds and all involved with steroids a hard time and Manny is not getting a free pass with me just because he is a Dodger.  I also hate that only after players get caught using steroids is when they apologize and they say how sorry they are.  Are they truly sorry or sorry that they got caught?   I am disgusted with all the players that have cheated this great game but especially with those that already had great abilities.

Is a sad day in baseball but like Vin Scully said today in his broacast “no one man stops baseball.”

Happy Jackie Robinson Day Everyone!

I hope everyone is having a beautiful Jackie Robinson Day!  I am off in a few minutes to my beloved OLOCR (Our Lady of Chavez Ravine).    I got my Jackie Robinson jersey in the car!

I am still high from the great Opening Day!   After Vin Scully threw out the ceremonial first pitch, I could not stop the tears when I heard Vin say “Two things,   #1  In all the years I needed you more than you needed me”.  “#2.  Is time now for Dodger Baseball”.    He threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Joe Torre.  Joe came over afterwards and touched his face.   Vin’s wife was wearing a beautiful baby blue dress.

The players were announced in numerical order with Tommy Lasorda being first with his #2 retired number.  No, he did not have his uniform on.  He only wears it during Spring Training.  the players came out from the field level and the outfielders and pitchers from the left field pavilion.   The last number coming out was #99 Manny.

We all heard O-Dog hit for the cycle, Andre hit two homeruns but Chad Billingsley cannot be overlooked in his great performance where he did not walk a batte rand he struck out 13.   11.  Thanks LuvDodgers23 for the correction!

Wishing you all a great Jackie Robinson Day!

Emma

Blue Skies Nothing but Dodger Blue Skies…

Blue Skies Nothing but Dodger Blue skies smiling at me :-)…Yes!  Manny is back!  .Here is  Old Blue eyes who was a big Dodger fan singing Blue Skies.

Blue skies with Old Blue Eyes

I was blue, just as blue as I could be
Evry day was a cloudy day for me
Then good luck came a-knocking at my door
Skies were gray but theyre not gray anymore

Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see

Bluebirds
Singing a song
Nothing but bluebirds
All day long

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When youre in love, my how they fly

Blue days
All of them gone
Nothing but blue skies
From now on

[2]
I should care if the wind blows east or west
I should fret if the worst looks like the best
I should mind if they say it cant be true
I should smile, thats exactly what I do
