Koufax found wondering in the parking lot

Getting to the stadium early for batting practice you meet a lot of fans.   Last night on Sandy Koufax bobblehead night,  after the 7th inning stretch we noticed Michael who we usually see during BP, was standing behind us.  He was asking “Who did I miss during BP?   We told him “Maury Wills was signing”   He has gotten Maury Wills autograph before.  We also told him Sandy Koufax did not appear to be at the stadium that night.  He then started telling us why he was late.   Here is his story:

“I got to the stadium early today (8/7) because it was not just a bobble head game, but the Sandy Koufax bobble head game. The most popular bobble head, right up there with the upcoming Vin Scully bobble head.

I was able to park on Stadium Way in front of the Barlow Hospital, and around 4:40pm, walked over to wait with the other fans at the Elysian Park entrance, where we would be let in at 5:10pm.

I saw three boys petting and playing with a young kitten who was just laying on the sidewalk just inside the Dodger Stadium parking gate. I asked if it was their kitten and they said no, they had just found it there. One of the boys was able to pick the kitten up and it seemed pretty tame. I picked the kitten up, and it appeared to be a boy and about eight weeks old. I went to the front of the line with the kitten and told the security guard about it. I said I wanted to take the kitten home, but wondered if someone at Dodger Stadium could keep it somewhere until the end of the game. The security officer said probably not, and pointed me to the main parking hut, where the security guards let people into the stadium. I told them my story, and they said they couldn’t help, but did offer me some water for the kitten.

My options seemed to be to have security call animal services and pick up the kitten, or leave the kitten in my car until the game was over some five or six hours later.

Neither opinion seemed reasonable, as I didn’t want the kitten taken to the pound, nor did I want to leave it in a car for hours when it was about 90 degrees out. I also didn’t think leaving the kitten where it was found was very safe, as it was next to the 10 lanes of traffic where people drive in and out of Dodger Stadium.

While my daughter Dianna kept the kitten company in the car, I went to the Barlow Hospital but they couldn’t help either. I called the Dodger Fan Assistance line and they also could not help me.

I ended up calling my wife Donna, and she drove from Sherman Oaks, while I drove to back to Griffith Park, so we could meet half way at the zoo parking lot, and I passed the kitten over to her so she could take him home.

We ended up making it back to the game and getting our bobble heads, but missed batting practice and the chance to get autographs. A small price to pay for saving a life. The kitten is doing fine. We’re going to call him “Koufax.”

Meet Koufax

Thanks Michael for sharing the story and the pictures of your kitty Koufax.   Thank you for giving  little Koufax a home.

A Salute to Dodger fans in the latest Dodgers Magazine

The following is the copy of the latest Dodger Magazine:

Dodger Fans with 30 or more years as Season Ticket holders

In it, it shows Dodger fans that have had their season tickets for 30 years or more.   Although I started 30 years ago as a season ticket holder, my total years do not equal that.   I do have friends in that picture.

The September magazine saluted us fans as the 10th player!   Is nice to have a magazine dedicated to us fans.  In addition to a salute to the long time season ticket holders, the Dodgers took the time to interview a lot of Dodger fans for the magazine like the Aisle 2 Crew in the Reserved and yours truly.

Jorge Martin approached me in the last Viva Los Dodgers event when he spotted me wearing a Javy Guerra batting practice jersey.   I had spotted the jersey in the club level and although it fits me big, I just had to buy it.  Here is the article in the magazine with the pictures

EMMA IS HERE .   Emma Amaya shows her loyalty is True Blue By Jorge Martin & Cary Osborne

WHEN EMMA AMAYA calls Dodger Stadium “my second home, my second family,” she’s not kidding.  Amaya is a fixture in the Top Deck in her season seats, but when the Dodgers are away from home or out of season, her passion for the team remains strong.

She Flew to Minnesota this year to catch the Dodgers during an interleague series.   She is a regular at autograph signings around the southland.  Often camping out for hours to assure herself a great spot.  She even visited Citi Field in New York to see the Brooklyn Dodgers memorabilia, especially the Jackie Robinson exhibit.  Amaya even gave Dodger Reliever Javy Guerra a book about the history of Mexican baseball players who have played in Los Angeles, something that Guerra had started to read.

Emma Amaya

You see, Amaya takes this “Dodger family” stuff really seriously. Amaya said she grew up a football fan.  A boyfriend took her to Dodger Stadium one time and she was hooked.  Before long Amaya began coming regularly to games with a friend who educated her on the Brooklyn Dodgers, Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale.

Now it’s her doing the educating.  During the Brooklyn days, the biggest superfan was Hilda Chester.  Chester was a regular at Ebbets Field, but achieved fame by banging a frying pan with an iron ladle from her seat in the bleachers.  people took notice.

(Left) Amaya posed with Duke Snider’s half of Fame plaque.

Emma & Eric as Hilda Chester and the Brooklyn Bum

Including Dodger players who in the 1930’s presented her with a cowbell.  After suffering a second heart attach, it is said that former Dodger manager Leo Durocher visited her in the hospital.  She returned to the bleaches with her Brooklyn accent and cowbell to cheer sounding as strong as ever.  A sign near her seat would proclaim, “Hilda is Here!”

Amaya doesn’t fashion herself exactly as a 21st Century Hilda Chester, but she did come to Opening Day last season dressed as the legendary fan.  a curious usher asked about her costume.

“Look her up,” Amaya told the usher.  “When I come here tomorrow, you tell me something that tells me you did look it up.”

The Next Day, the usher saw Amaya and yelled out one of Chester’s favorite lines, “EAT YOUR HEART OUT, YOU BUMS!”

Amaya speaks affectionately and nostalgically about the Dodgers, pointing out that the first year that she had season tickets was 1981–The year of Fernandomania and the World Series against  the New York Yankees.  A computer programmer from El Monte, Amaya has also helped build communities both in and around Dodger Stadium.  sh has developed bonds with Dodger fans on Twitter and the regulars at her Top Deck seats at Dodger Stadium, and has even gone to Dodger related events with the people she sits with at games.

One of those events led to a memorable exchange with a Dodger player.  After Matt Kemp hit a 10th inning walk-off single on August 12, Amaya and a friend immediately left from Dodger Stadium and headed down to Redondo Beach.  They They camped out outside of a store where Kemp was to sign autographs the following morning.  amaya finally made her way to the front of the line and met Kemp, who after hearing about her coming striahgt from the game asked Amaya, “Did you eat?”

Kemp might have been thinking about theat interaction when he did another autograph signing on Aug. 26.  On that day, Kemp ordered pizza for everyone in line.

Amaya smiles easily when she talks about the team she has pent more than three decades following closely.  she summed up so much of what keeps brning her back day after day, year after year when she said:  “I love watching a triple, I love watching a pitcher’s duel.  I love watching a well-executed double play.  I love the game, and I love the Dodgers”

Thank you Dodgers!  Thank you Jorge Martin & Cary Osborne and all that contributed to the article.  I am humble by it all.

Here is a picture of Jayv Guerra holding the book I gave him:

Gracias @JavyGuerra54 for signing @luvthedodgers23 and my picture! We are proud of you! #socialSept

Thoughts and Prayers to Bryan Stow

My thoughts and prayers go to Giant fan Bryan Stow who is fighting for his life in a coma after he was beaten at Dodger Stadium on Opening Day.

At the moment we cannot post pictures since the MLB blog is under construction so here is the link of the sketch of the two guys that assaulted Bryan Stow. The suspects are believed to be between 18 to 25 years.

update: Picture is working now.

I hope they find the two criminals that did this to this poor guy.

At this time, the reward is up to 50,000. Dodgers Spokesman Josh Rawitch said Monday the team will contribute $25,000. Giants spokeswoman Staci Slaughter said the team will pledge $10,000.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich previously offered a reward of $10,000 for information leading to arrests in the beating case.

American Medical Response, the paramedic company Stow worked for, is also offering a $5,000 reward.

God hear our prayers on the recovery of Bryan Tow.

Keeping Score in the Top Deck at Dodger Stadium

This is Jeanine’s scorebook for 2011.   Every year she makes a scorebook for the entire season.  this year she is featuring us in her scorebook cover!   Jeanine is the one under the words “Stadium.”   Thanks Jeanine!

Jeanine's scorebook.jpg

During last Summer, Kris Erskine of the LA Times wrote an article saying that hardly anyone keeps score these days.   Jeanine took this picture and invited Kris to come by to the Top Deck anytime he wants.   I had also read the article and I sent Kris an email inviting him to come and see that there are still fans that do keep score.

There are more fans that keep score in our section like Ray and Ray Junior.  They sit in the row infront of me.  I can always count on them if I happen to miss a play.

I took the picture because I thought it was so cute that father and daughter were keeping score.

This boy was sitting in the same row I sit.   He looks very serious keeping score.

All pictures from the Top Deck section 3.

By the time the season starts, I’ll be ready with scorebook on hand to continue with the tradition.   March 31st can’t get here soon enough.

Independence Day Fireworks at Dodger Stadium

John Ely did not have a good night.  He could not get out of the 3rd inning.  The good news was the bullpen.  Jeff Weaver and Belisario pitched scoreless innings.  The Dodgers made it close with Rafael Furcal extending his hitting streak by belting a two run homerun.   Final score Marlins 6, Dodgers 5.

Here are some pictures from the game:

Vin Scully and Fans at Camelback Ranch

Tony Barrial started this on facebook:

Vinny’s 60th Dodger season deserves a salute. SO at the bottom of the 4th EVERY HOME GAME in 2010; before the Dodgers UP; All fans stand up, face the pressbox and chant Vinny until stadium is chanting and Nancy starts to play “It Had To Be You!”

Tony:  Is actually 61th Dodger season.
The fans started it last Sunday on Vin’s first game at Camelback!  I can’t wait to be at the Dodger Stadium so we can start the chant “Vinny, Vinny, Vinny…”

“I’m supposed to cut back on dangling participles and I’m not allowed to split any infinitives for at least another week,” Vin Scully told news reporters inside the Dodgers spring training complex in Glendale, Az.

Here is a picture as posted by the great Dodger photographer Jon So Hoo:

VIN SCULLY! WE LOVE YOU!!

Also, from my trip at Camelback a few weeks ago, here is a youtube of the Boilers Dodger club fans shot by Roberto of Vinscullyismyhomeboy  when I was at Camelback:

Earlier I had taken this picture outside by the roped area.

I had never heard of the this Dodger club until I saw them at Camelback Ranch.

Dodger fans showed up in San Diego but team was MIA.

A lot of us Dodger fans went to San Diego but the Dodgers forgot to show up.   It was great running into lots of friends that I regularly see at Dodger Stadium.   But the team, well, they have lost four in a row.

They scored one freaking run in two games and the run scored was because of an error!

Too much pre-celebration boys? You played like you still had a hang-over. Fine way to get ready for the playoffs.

I went over to the Big Wrecking Crew forum to see what was being said yesterday in the game thread. Here is some o f the comments:

The Dodgers are stinking it up so much their LOB average is shrinking.

To quote Bob Uecker, “One hit? One %$#()# hit!”

How ’bout Russell Martin? Guy is building a case where he will have to give money back at arbitration.

Can someone remind me again the reason we got Thome?

A comedy of errors. Bad news freaking bears.

Ya think the boys just wanna go home? It’s all over the faces and body language. Let’s just get this game done, take a day off.

Isn’t that what they have been doing since they went on this roadie?

I wonder if Ned can talk the Indians into dealing us Santana back for Martin? We may have to sweeten the pot, methinks

Maybe if we let them have Thome too?

….and Torre. I hear they need a manager.

…and Manny? He could finish his career where it started.

Geez, I am so glad the Padres traded Peavy, we would be in deep if we had to face him, next season.

The drama builds. will we be able to get a second hit in this game?????

Andre was 1 for 29 on the road trip? Good gravy.

KEMP WALKS!!!!!!

A RALLY!

What is this rally thing you speak of, Pastor?

Ah, that was fun! Five hits in two games. I hope these clowns enjoy their day off, they freakin’ well need it.

think we need the day off as much, if not more, than they do.

ABSOLUTELY F’ING PATHETIC.

Colorado better lose tomorrow because I can’t see us winning a single game this weekend.

I wonder if McCourt will try to sell the champagne to Colorado?

Dodger fans:  I feel your pain.

Dodger players:  Try not to party as much as you did in San Diego so you can bring your A game to the stadium and clinch the NL West!

Colorado Rockies in town for the weekend starting Friday but first they are playing against Milwaukee today and currently winning  7-1.

Question:  Does MLB have a players curfew?
